The Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), also known as the snow monkey, is an Old World terrestrial monkey native to Japan. They are colloquially known as "snow monkeys" because some of them live in areas where snow covers the ground for months. annually - no other non-human primates live further north or live in colder climates. Individuals have gray-brown plumage, pink muzzle and short tail.

Two subspecies are known. In Japan, this species is known as Nihonzaru (ニ, a combination of Nihon 日本 "Japanese" + saru 猿 "monkey") to distinguish it from other primates, but Japanese monkeys are very familiar in Japan, so when the Japanese just say saru - They usually mean Japanese monkeys.

Outside, scary snow monkeys at Jigokudani Monkey Park in Japan descend from the forest and dive into natural hot springs known as onsen. Primates live further north. These Old World monkeys are an intricate pack known for washing food before eating and enjoying this hot bath. They live in large groups and often swim together. There is a bit of fun - they sometimes watched them engage in snowball fights and even the youngest take part in the action.
